Typically pianos, safes, pool tables, large or fragile artwork, antiques, aquariums and heavy machinery. The common thread is concentrated weight, awkward balance, or fragility that ordinary handling does not account for.
Because the constraint is the route rather than the distance. Stairs, turns, doorway widths and floor type all change the equipment and crew needed, so it is assessed on its own before the price is set.
Pianos generally settle after a move and are usually tuned once they have acclimatised to the new room, since temperature and humidity in the new space affect the instrument. Tuning is a separate trade from moving.
The dimensions and weight of the item, the width of every doorway and stairwell on the route, the turns involved, and the floor at both ends. Where the route will not take it, alternatives such as removing a window are assessed at that point.
